Last Sunday night, I attended a two-hour “kamikaze” art exhibition at PØST, curated by my friend Danny Shain. Each night, for the entire rest of the month, a new show will be opening and closing in the space, in keeping with masochistic gallery director (and incredible artist) HK Zamani’s rationale that “Difficult times invite difficult gestures. Danny’s show was entitled epiphenomenon and included works found, made or saved by the participating artists (Richard Diebenkorn, Jeff Kopp, Anders Lansing, Robert Levine, Trevor Norris, Chris Pate, Michael Pierzynski, Richard Serra, Danny Shain, and artist/gallerist HK Zamani. )
Highlights included paint pans that Richard Diebenkorn had used as palettes for his signature Ocean Park series – which curator Shain collected as cast-offs from the artist while helping him to move from Santa Monica to Healdsberg.
Also intriguing was a box of wax noses (the artist’s nose, by the way) by Michael Pierzynski, cast for his 2007 sculpture, Breathe.
